On the Road to Pai

You need to have a strong stomach and a lot of time in front of you to spend if you want to go to Pai. This little hippie town in the North mountains of Thailand is, said the Lonely Planet, “more a place to live and a state of mind than a place where you will visit”. Not a lot of lines to describe the place, I just take my chance and buy a ticket to go there.

After 300.000 turns and curves on the road, I arrived in Pai. I dropped my belongings in my hostel. The Pai Cat Hut. An amazing little hostel, with bungalows around a garden, some swings in the open commune area and nice backpackers around.

Pai is a place were you relax. I start to walk and realise the centre consisted in 4 streets, where the night markets and the places to go out at night were. Amazing! No tuk tuks, nobody harassing you in the street to force you to buy things, a lot of backpackers and locals talking to each other’s, a mosque in the centre and such a COOL VIBE. Rastafaris driving motorbikes everywhere, lady wearing veils, blues man playing guitar in cafes and European a bit tipsy outside the seven eleven after 8 o’clock. Dogs wandering in the streets, street food for 10 baths, an idillyc sunset on the river with dragonflies flying upon my head. A nice book to read in a hammoc or friends that you meet for breakfast after a night out. Mountain bikes that you rent to visit the Chinese temple and jump in a cold waterfall. A night, observing the stars on the top of the mountain, observed by the big white Buddha. Artists, creators, philosophy and poetry that you can find in every corner. Yoga lessons under a tree and thinking about life, about love, about travels, about everything and nothing.

I found all that in Pai but it was my first day here and I just started to understand that I will drop a bit of my heart in that place. It was paradise.
