I wake up early, packed my stuff and jumped on a scooter taxi towards the bus station.
I slept the entire trip, only to wake up on a pier. Who said big buses are not comfy in Asia?
The ferry drove me to Koh Chang, where I took an open truck taxi to my bungalow, in the south of the island. I was the last one to get off and it looked like this place was at the end of the world. I dropped my bag and my shoes outside of this little home on piloti, facing the sea. I was ready to be on my own for few days, far away from everybody and it felt great.
Some things make you feel instinctively at home. These days, I felt really comforted by the view of my backpack and my converses. For a simple reason I guess, I’ve travelled everywhere with them so I can picture these two objects in a lot of nice moments and in front of spectacular landscapes, always by my side. I can hate them as much as I love them.
It was not even a question to think about buying another rucksack for this trip even if the armatures are heavy as hell. Of course I damn it when I have to walk for a long time under the sun, I often imagine how nice it would be to travel with a lighter bag but I couldn’t betray it. It had to come with me. You don’t leave your best friend on the side of the road do you?
I couldn’t imagine not taking my converses even if I new they would probably die on the way. There is a little hole under the left shoe and they probably don’t look fancy now they are turning grey and red…ish.
But they protected my feet from the bite of the Vietnamese spiders in the Jungle, some volcano stones rolled under them in Iceland, they have seen the Ocean in Australia and the red dusty path of the countryside, I’ve walked outside the plane in New Zealand wearing my beloved and they were the easiest and most comfortable shoes I could wear in London to dance forever at the Riddley Market Bar stage. They were maybe not the best option of shoes I could take with me for this trip in but any other pair was a big no-no.
It is really confusing for a sleepy backpacker spirit to wake up in the middle of the night and not recognize anything around you. As soon as I see my big bag shadow and the two dark babies on its side, a warm feeling arose. You just feel like a baby waking up in the middle of the night just to find his teddy bear. As soon as you have it, you know that you are safe. No matter where you are in the end, you are at home.
Thank you Travis for the corrections!
