As proper wanderlust kings and queens, we haven’t booked any accommodation in Koh Rong. Mistake!
In London, my flatmate Albert never stopped talking about Koh Rong. He has been there three years ago and described the place as “deserted and incredible”. Exactly what we were searching for. I was curious to see a part of Cambodia who was so different than how I picturised this country. Usually, you associate Cambodia with red path, banana and Palm trees, Buffaloes in the rice fields and Khmer people on a bicycle… Okay that is really a stereotype but you must admit that if I say “Cambodia” you are not going to think straight away to a deserted beach place right?
In three years, the place obviously changed a lot. Full boats arriving on the pier twice a day and bars all along the street facing the sea changed a bit the landscape… However, this little gem is still protected in a way and I’ve rarely see a place like that. No medical emergencies, no real authorities, a bit hippy, Koh Rong is still a place where you can relax and stay easily one week without being bored.
Crazy sunsets, white sand beaches, night swims with phosphorescent plancton, barbecues on the pier, sweet bungalows, easy going people, life was sweet and nice there… Koh Rong, you caught my heart…
